Guinea reported the first cases of the Ebola virus in a possible resurgence of the disease since the world’s worst outbreak in 2013-16.
Three people have died from Ebola and five others have tested positive for the virus in southeastern Guinea, the public health agency said.
The five still alive have been isolated in treatment centers, the ANSS agency said on Sunday.
Patients became ill with diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding after attending a funeral in Goueke sub-prefecture.
It was not clear whether the person buried on February 1 – a nurse from the local health center who fell ill – had also died of Ebola.
The last major Ebola outbreak in West Africa started in Guinea. It has killed at least 11,300 people, the vast majority of cases in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Guinea would now contact the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health agencies to acquire vaccines against the Ebola virus. Vaccines have dramatically improved survival rates in recent years.
The Ebola virus causes severe vomiting and diarrhea and is spread by contact with body fluids.
Congo reported three new cases of Ebola this month in one of the epicenters of the outbreak in eastern North Kivu province.
