The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), a constituent of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana and a leading biomedical research institute in the sub-region, in collaboration with the Japan Cooperation Agency International (JICA), is organizing a training program for selected West African health professionals at the Noguchi Memorial Institute.
The training program: “Third country training course on improving laboratory skills for infectious diseases in West African countries for post-Ebola“, is designed provide intensive and detailed training in modern laboratory technology to improve disease surveillance and prevention and to upgrade the skills of laboratory technicians in Ghana and neighboring countries.
According to the director of the Institute, Professor Abraham Kwabena Anang: “One of the most important priorities of international cooperation based on human security is the improvement of health systems, to ensure the prevention and management of various fatal infections. Obtaining enough health workers and developing their capacities are important parts of such an effective health system. And that is what we are trying to build at the Noguchi Memorial Institute with the support of the Japanese government.
He continued, “Since the need for functional medical teams comprising physicians and other health professionals, including laboratory technicians, is paramount for the functioning of effective and efficient health systems, there is an urgent need to develop specialists in biomedical laboratory technology. This is due to the essential role they play in the diagnosis and treatment of infections. ”
The course was established to provide an intensive and comprehensive training program in modern laboratory technology at an African Center of Excellence for Disease Surveillance and Prevention in Ghana, namely the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR). This is to help improve the skills of laboratory technicians across West Africa.
The training program which aims to improve the techniques and skills of laboratory staff for the diagnosis of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses will be held in Ghana for 8 weeks from 7e January 2019 to 1st March 2019. Participants in the first course are from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Ghana.
As part of the training, participants will learn the best laboratory practices and the latest innovations from technologists from the departments of Bacteriology, Parasitology and Virology of the Noguchi Institute. At the end of their training, they will have the opportunity to improve the quality of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infections in medical institutions or laboratories in their various countries.
JICA remains committed to supporting the Noguchi Memorial Institute in its quest to provide world-class biomedical health services and training in Ghana and beyond. The Japanese government continues to support Ghana’s efforts to actualize quality and accessible universal health care.
