South African drug regulator SAHPRA said on Monday it had approved a study to implement the COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, but was still examining its full application to the market.
The implementation study will aim to inoculate between 350,000 and 500,000 health workers, with the first batch of 80,000 doses due to arrive this week, President Ramaphosa told lawmakers on Thursday.
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) said J&J had not yet submitted an application for emergency use authorization for its vaccine, as the country most affected by infections and coronavirus deaths has yet to begin its mass inoculation campaign.
