Energy Minister-designate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, responded to criticism of a ‘rude’ comment he was accused of making about the former Minister of Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang in early 2017.
The deputy of Manhyia Sud, designated energy minister, said on Friday that he “regretted” his description of Professor Opoku Agyemang as “a shame for education,” adding that in hindsight, “I am sure the words I used are harsh and I apologize. ”
Taking his turn to Parliament’s Appointments Committee for consideration, Dr Prempeh also withdrew a comment he made against ex-President John Mahama after accusing him of driving people instead of independence, in Accra, and paying them to pretend to collapse during the Senior Placement in High School (SHS).
“The information that I relied on, the sources I will not be able to bring to this House and that is why I cannot prove it,” he said, adding: “I actually said that I would use different words and I regret it. If those words that I have used hurt her, I will step back and apologize to her.
Regarding Prof. Agyemang, the candidate explained that his predecessor had infuriated him by claiming that the government’s Free SHS program was something that was “fooling Ghanaians” because it was not factored into the 2017 budget. , before the policy is launched.
“Immediately after the launch of Free Senior High School, she returned to the airwaves to say that Free Senior High School was created by her together with Progressive Free Senior High School. And it is in this context that I said that the former ministers did not come after their successors because if I go through its handing over, it is a shame for education, ”he explained.
Napo added, “This sentence was not about Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang at all. I had never said anything against him, but this same sentence that I used about three times. So when you look at the context of that, then it’s an education disgrace. I used it during his tenure.
“I said this when I looked at his release notes, other than what happened because my statement was that if you launched Free SHS, why are you asking me to add a policy document . That was it, ”he postulated.
GETFUND scholarship
He also responded to criticism regarding his acceptance of a scholarship from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) in 2016.
He said on Friday that he had done nothing wrong since MPs were also eligible for such grants, saying: “Mr. President, members of this house… in fact, the GETFund administrator at the time gave a press conference about it and said he didn’t want to mention any names. He did it for both sides of the House.
“On this particular course, I went with another member who was part of the majority (NDC). I do not regret. It wasn’t done for me alone, and getting the same opportunity, I will do it again.
