As Knull tightens his grip during King in Black, two of the dark god’s latest symbiote recruits break free from his insidious control.

As Knull’s army of ravenous symbiotes swept through the Marvel Universe during the crossover event King in black, many hapless heroes and villains have been horribly recruited into the forces of the dark god after being bonded to a symbiote of their own. Among the most recent recruits in the Unstoppable Invasion of Knull are Typhoid Mary and Daredevil, both overwhelmed by the symbiotes as they attempt to protect those around them from Knull’s grip.

And while the evil demigod’s control over his army seemed to be absolute, linked to each of his soldiers telepathically through their collective hive spirit, Mary and Matt Murdock proved to be strong enough to break Knull’s conditioning.
For Mary, the reason is relatively simple: The supervillain has become accustomed to multiple voices in her head competing for control of her body all her life. While Knull is a significant addition to her psyche, Mary is of course more than willing to resist his commands to indulge herself and enjoy the perks that come with her symbiote upgrade. And when Mary crosses paths with Elektra, with the Master Assassin now serving as Hell’s Kitchen’s new Daredevil while Matt is in prison, Mary goes so far as to attack other nearby symbiotes to ensure that the opportunity to kill Elektra remains at hand. she and she alone open. challenge of Knull’s orders.
Although locked in a maximum security prison, Matt was also linked to one of Knull’s symbiotes while fighting to protect those around him. Transformed into a monstrous version of the Fearless Man, Matt’s immense willpower, deep faith, and previous experience possessed by the dark forces give him a degree of lucidity through Knull’s control. During the crossover event Shadowland, Matt had been possessed by the patron demon of the ancient ninja cult The Main, known as the Beast. The entity would gradually make Matt a considerably darker and more violent figure, taking on New York’s superhero community after brutally murdering Bullseye and targeting those who opposed him and The Hand’s sinister agenda.
As the Beast was finally purged of Matt and the Scarlet Swashbuckler regained all of his faculties, Matt was visibly shaken by the ordeal and battled with the darker side of his psyche for years. Fueled by his epic sense of guilt and propensity for self-punishment, Matt is able to break free from Knull’s telepathic control long enough to find the prison’s functional electric chair and blow himself up with enough electricity to do fry the symbiote linked to it. Now clearly back in full control of himself, Matt takes the opportunity to flee prison amid the chaos caused by the attacking symbiotes and the jailbreak that followed.
Knull has used his symbiotes to take control of Earth’s mightiest heroes, turning even the most stoic and powerful superheroes into his dumb pawns as he steadily conquers the planet. In short, Typhoid Mary and Daredevil have shown that they each possessed enough willpower, hardened by their own respective past experiences, to break Knull’s telepathic control and subvert the monstrous symbiotes bound to them.
While this proved to be a minor setback, at best, for Knull’s overall conquest of the Marvel Universe, the Fearless Man is again a relatively free man, ready to do his part to defend his hometown.
