The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is recruiting 50,000 people to participate in cocoa rehabilitation work nationwide, said Chief Executive Officer Joseph Boahen Aidoo over the weekend.
Already, he revealed that 30,000 people had been hired for the pollination of the land, while 48,000 others had been hired for the mass spraying of cocoa.
Interacting with the media in Abesim, near Sunyani during a visit to the Bono region, Aidoo said the cocoa sector contributes to a substantial aspect of the country’s gross domestic product and that cocoa products also had huge health benefits.
“Cocoa has a significant impact on blood circulation and improves cognitive intelligence,” he said and advised Ghanaians to consume more cocoa products in order to strengthen their immune systems against disease.
Mr. Aidoo said that on a global scale, Ghana is producing the highest quality cocoa beans, hence the need for the nation to invest heavily and make the cocoa sector a catalyst for expanding foreign income of the country.
He called on the media to support and intensify advocacy and subsequent adoption of legislation that would support the US $ 400 Living Income Differential (LID) in the cocoa sector.
The LID of $ 400 is a new bonus intended to help the country’s cocoa farmers tackle widespread farmer poverty.
Mr Aidoo added that LID had come to stay, saying COCOBOD was engaging minority leaders in parliament to facilitate the passage of legislation that would help with its implementation.
