Former Technical Director of the Nigeria Athletics Federation (AFN), Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (Rtd) described his recent appointment as World Athletics Instructor in Ghana Athletics as an opportunity to reignite the relationship sport between Nigeria and Ghana.
Nesiama said this in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) on Monday in response to his appointment and the expectations of his mission in Ghana.
He said the appointment would give him the opportunity to strategize with Ghana’s athletics officials on how to establish regional athletics meetings, where athletes and coaches from the West African region can compete and exchange ideas.
“My nomination by World Athletics shows that we have the material here in Nigeria and that we are doing something good that people could see.
“This appointment will undoubtedly further the sporting relationship we already have with Ghana because when I was the technical director of the AFN I normally invite their athletes to Nigeria and they also invite our athletes.
“This type of relationship can rekindle such activity. In addition, I advocate the creation of a regional athletics competition, where we can compete; athletes, coaches and technical officials can be exchanged.
“With this type of training, it will now be easy to combine the processes and procedures of athletics activities in Nigeria and Ghana, to foster better interaction.
“Thus, this training will allow such an interaction between the two countries, as well as with other countries that will engage with us,” said Nesiama.
He said Ghana Athletics had many advantages, especially consistency and organization, although Nigeria were ahead of them in talent development and world rankings.
NAN reports that the Level 1 Technical Education and Certification System Course for Ghanaian Athletics will be held February 15-20 in Accra, through a combination of written, oral and practical exams, for each official. .
The training was designed to prepare officials for international championships. (NOPE)
