Reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen has already reserved his place in the world chess championship, described as “the highlight of the world chess calendar”.

The contest will be decided on the best of 14 matches, with the scores of all matches added up to determine the winner, who will receive a prize of € 2million (£ 1.7million / $ 2.4million) .

The identity of the Norwegian’s opponent in the flagship game remains to be determined, with Carlsen set to face the winner of the FIDE Candidates Tournament.

Although the tournament started as planned in March 2020 in Yekaterinburg, Russia, the competition was halted due to the development of the coronavirus pandemic.

At the time he was stopped there were co-leaders at the top of the table – Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi, both with 4.5 points.

The Candidates Tournament is set to resume in Yekaterinburg on April 19.

Whoever wins will face the current world champion in both quick and blitz formats, with Carlsen, 30, set to make his fifth appearance in a world championship match.
