Olympic champion gymnast Simone Biles has said she will prevent her daughter from joining the US Gymnastics Organization following the organization’s handling of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal.
Nassar, a former doctor with USA Gymnastics, was convicted and sentenced to over 300 years in prison in 2018 after being accused of abuse by more than 250 athletes – including Biles.
Biles, now 23, said if she had a daughter she would not allow her to train with USA Gymnastics.
When asked about CBS’s 60 minutes, she replied, “No. Because I don’t feel comfortable enough, because they didn’t take responsibility for their actions and what they did.
“And they didn’t assure us it would never happen again.”
Biles, who dominated artistic gymnastics since making her debut as a teenager in 2013, said she felt personally disappointed with USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic Committee.
“We bring them medals,” said the four-time Olympic gold medalist.
“We’re doing our part. Can’t you do your part back? It’s just, like, it’s sickening.”
Asked about the unanswered questions, she replied: “Who knew what, when?
“You failed so many athletes. And most of us minors. Don’t you think that’s a bigger problem?
“Like, if it was me and I knew something, I would like this to be resolved immediately.”
In January 2020, USA Gymnastics announced plans to pay a settlement of $ 215 million (£ 164 million) to the group of athletes abused by Nassar.
USA Gymnastics President and CEO Li Li Leung told CBS they “recognize how much we have broken the trust of our athletes and our community, and are working hard to restore that trust.”
US Patron of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Sarah Hirshland, said she wanted to “repeat” the organization’s apologies “to all who have been injured.”
