The representative of the Western region on the Council of State, Ms. Eunice Jacqueline Buah, retained her post after securing 24 votes in yesterday’s replay.
During the elections of Friday February 12, 2021 to elect the regional representatives to the Council of State, the elections of the West region ended in a tie since Ms. Buah and another aspirant, Nana Bonkyi Akomea, polled 14 votes each.
The elections were therefore postponed until yesterday during which Ms. Buah polled 24 votes to win the seat against the four votes of Nana Akomea.
This brings to 15 the number of regions which have elected their representatives to the Council of State.
What remains to be done is the Bono Est region following a court injunction by some members of the assembly in the districts of Atebubu-Amantin and Kintampo Nord.
Ms. Buah thanked the people for their trust and promised to work for the benefit of all in the western region.
Background
At the end of the nominations on February 4, 2021, six candidates, Ms. Eunice Jacqueline Buah, 56-year-old businesswoman, Mr. Ntori-Bonkyi Akomea, 53, independent; Mr. Daniel Quayson, 65, finance and accounting professional; Nana Kwesi, 72, records and archives administrator; and Mr. Stephen Herbert Ocran, 68, lawyer applied.
One of the nominees, Mr. Dramani Kwabena, 45, an environmental health analyst, subsequently withdrew his candidacy.
Ms. Buah’s election brings to 15 the number of people elected to represent the regions on the Council of State, the constitutional body with a mandate to advise the president.
They will join the 11 people appointed by the president and the four ex officio members to form the council responsible for advising the president in his second four-year term.
