Interior Minister-designate Ambrose Dery revealed that the government has launched processes to step up border patrols following the Ebola outbreak in Guinea.
According to him, Ghana currently has more than 200 unapproved routes along our borders that require critical attention in order to prevent the importation of the disease into the country.
Guinea has so far recorded up to 10 suspected cases of Ebola and 5 people have died since the start of the new outbreak of the deadly virus in the West African country, medical authorities said on Tuesday.
Guinea’s health ministry said it had identified 115 contacts of the known cases in the city of Nzerekore in the southeast of the country and 10 in the capital Conakry since the outbreak was confirmed on Sunday.
Unlike the deadliest known outbreak, which ravaged West Africa from 2013 to 2016, Guinean authorities have said they are better prepared to stop the spread of the virus.
But in response to a question during his review, Mr Dery said the Immigration Service, along with other security agencies, would secure Ghana’s borders against such an outbreak.
Noting that the outbreak is a matter of concern to the government, he told the Nominations Committee that the government will ensure that the necessary resources are provided to immigration officials to prevent the outbreak in Ghana.
“We have to work hard to make sure Ebola doesn’t come here (Ghana). And I am committed to making sure that we protect our borders as much as possible, which is why we are strengthening the capacity of the immigration service.
“But at the end of the day, we still need technology to help us, and I think most of all we need the support of the people. That’s why we build good relations with people at the border, ”he said.
