The Kumawu government polyclinic in Sekyere Kumawu district has suspended surgeries and other services after a rainstorm ripped part of its roof.
The affected men’s ward was closed, forcing patients to join the women’s and children’s departments.
The medical store and pharmacy are among the essential service delivery points affected by the rainstorm.
Damp equipment, medical supplies, registers and other essential documents are dried in the sun.
Tents are being erected to increase service delivery in parts of the facility spared by the storm.
Outpatient services, a dispensary and other services are provided under the tents. Patients should be seated in tents while awaiting treatment.
Services like Caesarean sections, while critical, are now on hold.
“We cannot do an emergency Caesarean section because the theater is affected. Our service for men is also affected, so we have transferred the men to the service for women and children. Most of the services are managed in tents, ”the medical director, Dr Alex Agbanu, is disturbed.
The Kumawu polyclinic is a reference center for many health facilities in the watershed. Referrals are currently being sent to Efiduase which is far from reaching.
Sekyere Kumawu District Health Director Lawrence Adinku is concerned that the challenge here may affect the delivery of general health care in the district.
For efficient care delivery, the hospital uses a paperless system which has been beneficial so far.
In the aftermath of the rainstorm, the computers that have become an essential part of the delivery of health care fail, forcing administrators to revert to the old inefficient system.
Dr Agbanu says the hospital cannot afford to buy new computers.
“A lot of patient information is in the system since we no longer use physical records. Although the system is functioning, there are no computers to help use the system. Management is finding ways to solve the problem, but we need public support to do it, especially with computers ”.
Meanwhile, district director general Samuel Addai Agyekum said the assembly will repair the roof as soon as possible.
The cost of the damage has already been assessed.
