The Hollywood Reporter has an explosive new behind-the-scenes look at what happened between Lucasfilm and actress Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune in “The Mandalorian.”
The context
Lucasfilm has cut ties with former “The Mandalorian” actress Gina Carano after a recent round of social media posts, as I wrote for Deseret News. Its release came hours after the #FireGinaCarano hashtag was circulated nationwide in response to one of Carano’s recent social media posts, which I wrote for Deseret News.
A Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement (via io9):
- “Gina Carano is currently not employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans to be in the future. Nonetheless, his social media posts denigrating people because of their cultural and religious identity are heinous and unacceptable. “
Carano shared an Instagram photo on his Instagram story who compared Jews attacked on the streets in the days of Nazi Germany to how people are treated today because of their political beliefs, as I wrote for the Deseret News.
- The photo was deleted from Carano’s Instagram story that day. Still, screenshots of the post circulated on social media.
New report
The Hollywood Reporter has a new behind-the-scenes report on what happened between Carano and Lucasfilm. Definitely worth reading, so check it out. But here are some of the takeaways from the article:
- Carano won $ 25,000 to $ 50,000 per episode of “The Mandalorian”.
- Carano was supposed to be a star actress in future “Star Wars” projects. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there appears to be a dispute over whether she will appear during future project presentations.
- Carano had been warned by Lucasfilm on several occasions about her social media before its release, according to the report.
What about the future?
I’ve written a lot about the fact that Carano’s release doesn’t mean Cara Dune could be part of the “Star Wars” universe. The character could appear on the road in an animated series, which was the case with previous “Star Wars” characters. She could appear in novels, comics and other works of art.
Meanwhile, Carano will be working with Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire on a new film project, as I wrote for the Deseret News. She will produce, direct and star in the film.
- “The Daily Wire is helping me achieve one of my dreams – to develop and produce my own film -” she said in a statement, according to Deadline. “I cried and my prayer was answered. J ‘sends a direct message of hope to all who live in fear of being canceled out by the totalitarian mob. I have only just started using my voice, which is now freer than ever, and I hope it does will inspire others to do the same. They cannot cancel us out if we don’t let them.
