Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami captured her second gold medal at the International Ski Federation Alpine Skiing World Championships after defeating American star Mikaela Shiffrin in the women’s giant slalom.
Gut-Behrami ended her wait for a world title on Matchday 1 at Cortina d’Ampezzo, as a favorite she triumphed in the women’s super-G event.
A second title remained on the line after the first round of the giant slalom, with Gut-Behrami 0.08 seconds off the lead in third place.
Shiffrin set the tone in 1min 13.22sec, with her teammate Nina O’Brien 0.02 in seconds.
Gut-Behrami reversed the deficit in the second set with a time of 1: 17.36, the Swiss star leading the standings with a combined of 2: 30.66.

She will head to the slalom event with three medals already won at the World Championships, including Alpine combined gold.
The podium was completed by Austria’s Katharina Liensberger, who finished 0.09 behind the winner in 2: 30.75.
