Some petitioners who want the President of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, to be removed from office, have said that they will start picketing indefinitely at the Presidency, at the headquarters of the EC and at the Supreme Court from Wednesday 24 February 2021.
This was in a notice to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command on Wednesday, February 17, 2021.
According to the petitioners, the planned picketing is to draw the attention of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to act on “our petition under Article 146 calling for the removal of Ms. Jean Adukwei Mensa from office. president of the electoral commission ”.
The notice continued: “The President, upon receipt of a Section 146 petition, should act as a treadmill in immediately referring it to the Chief Justice for further action.”
“The president has not done this since receiving our petition on January 21, 2021.”
“The picketing will take place three days a week from Wednesday to Friday from February 24, 2021, until our article 146 is applied,” indicates the notice to the regional police command.
He further stated that aware of “COVID-19 security protocols, there will be a maximum of 25 peaceful citizens picketing at each location.”
A private citizen, Mr. Elikem Kotoko, on Thursday January 21, 2021, petitioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the dismissal of the boss of the EC.
According to the ordinary citizen, the petition is based on “the declared misconduct of the chairman of the electoral commission”.
The petition said: “The current leaders under the presidency of Ms. Jean Adukwei Mensa, knowingly created constitutional crises through their actions and inactions in the run-up to the 2020 presidential elections, as they ignored the caution and advice of various stakeholders as to unfavorable results. and the implications of their actions and acts of omission. “
He noted that the President of the EC in a letter dated June 4, 2020 copied to the President, the Council of State had the possibility “in the hope of avoiding this action under Article 146 for his dismissal “, But she declined to respond” making this instant petition inevitable.
“At present, and in accordance with Rule 146, the President is required to bring to the immediate attention of the Chief Justice for the sole purpose of establishing the appropriate committee to fully investigate the allegations made in the petition by designated persons and organizations, to establish a case against the chairman of the electoral commission ultimately leading to the dismissal of Ms. Jean Adukwei Mensa from her functions in accordance with the petition.
The private citizen noted: “The petition is based on the declared misconduct of the chairman of the electoral commission which is not limited to blatant incompetence, prejudices, procurement failures and bad management practices. corporate governance.”
The petition also listed some cases resulting from the incompetence of the EC led by Mensa, bias and poor corporate governance posture such as “adversarial posture and alleged bias”.
He stressed that “there has been a breakdown in consensus with stakeholders by the EC led by Jean Mensa and the consequent marginalization of the Inter-Party Consultative Committee (IPAC)”.
He added that the Mensa-led EC “created a parallel advisory body, the Eminent Advisory Committee, which has largely disappeared and has proved irrelevant to the challenges that arose during the work of the leading Commission. to crises ”.
