The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, congratulated Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on his “historic” appointment as the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

In a letter addressed to the new boss of the WTO, President Akufo-Addo welcomed the fact that her election was made by consensus in the General Council of the WTO, thus making Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala “the first woman and the first African to occupy the Director General of the Organization. “

This, according to the President, “is a tribute to black women around the world, especially African women”

His appointment, the president explained, comes at a time when Africa has taken steps to liberalize intra-continental trade across the African continental free trade area, and the challenges posed by COVID-19.

“I firmly believe that you are eminently qualified to lead the Organization in these memorable times, and I assure you of the full support of the Government of Ghana in your new role,” added President Akufo-Addo.

The President, in a letter dated 17 February, sent a message of congratulations to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, on the appointment of Dr Okonjo-Iweala to his new post.

President Akufo-Addo assured the Nigerian people and their government of the “support of the Ghanaian Government in its new role”.
