LGBT + Rights Ghana has countered reports released by myjoyonline.com that the US ambassador was present at the group’s fundraiser.

The 31st In January 2021, the group organized a fundraiser to officially open a community space for its members and allies.

But this, according to LGBT + Rights Ghana, has “unfortunately prompted negative reporting riddled with false narratives in the Ghanaian media.”

The group said it was a complete lie that the Australian High Commission funded community offices.

“The High Commissioner was invited as a guest, as were other guests who graced the occasion, such as the Danish Ambassador and EU delegates, among others. Their support and solidarity with our course is one that LGBT + Rights Ghana values very much. Contrary to false information disseminated by myjoyonline.com, the United States Ambassador was not present at the event. Although we are currently withholding the location of our community space for the physical safety of our members, it is also wrong to point out that we are located in Tesano ”.

LGBT + Rights Ghana has also condemned the National Coalition for Human Sexual Rights and Family Values and its Executive Secretary, lawyer Moses Foe-Amoaning, for attempting what it describes as “sowing discord and incite violence against an oppressed group like ours. We urge them to direct their resources towards the fight against real social problems such as poverty, the covid-19 pandemic and the prevention of crimes such as the cultivation of rape and the abuse of women in Ghana ”.

The group insists that it is entitled to all rights and protections guaranteed by article 21 of Ghana’s 1992 constitution. “We have the right as Ghanaians to live in peace, to join groups, to be protected from harm and to have our privacy respected.”
