McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown says the budget cap will not be “perfect” in its debut season, but 2021 will signal the problems.
While the new generation of Formula 1 cars have been pushed back to 2022, the budget cap of $ 145 million per season is still in effect for 2021, a figure that will continue to decline in the seasons to come.
The cap wreaked havoc on Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull, the three teams established at the top of Formula 1’s spending charts, but Brown confirmed McLaren also had to cut their budget to fall within the limit.
“We were spending over the cap before, so we made some adjustments to get back to the cap,” he told GPFans.
“I think Andreas [Seidl, team principal] and the team has all the resources to operate at the cap, so spending on the cap and spending on total performance is a goal. “

But since 2021 is the first season with the cap in play, Brown expects problems to arise.
And with that in mind, he believes that it will take time for the real objectives of the budget cap to be achieved, namely to create a more level playing field.
“The FIA, the teams and Formula 1 have continuously worked on its definition and regulation,” he explained.
“I’m sure he will learn in the first year and it won’t be perfect. I think they will get there and it will achieve what we hoped to achieve, which is a more level playing field.
“I think there will be gaps, but we’ll move on. We are convinced that the limit will reach for the sport what we hoped for, but I am sure that there will be learnings throughout the year.
Mercedes is heading into the 2021 campaign as a clear favorite to win the drivers ‘and constructors’ titles for the eighth season in a row, although with regulations remaining stable, Red Bull is likely to be a threat, especially now that Sergio Perez is alongside Max Verstappen.
McLaren, meanwhile, has not targeted any specific position and is simply looking to reduce the deficit of Red Bull and Mercedes.
