The First Lady, Ms. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, commissioned and handed over a newly built library in Kumawu for the Sekyere Kumawu district and the Ghana Libraries Authority in the Ashanti region.
The facility is to encourage reading among children in the catchment area.
The library, which will serve the Anglican group of schools in Kumawu and the surrounding area, was built, furnished and funded by the Rebecca Foundation, with support from the Ghana Education Service, the Ghana Library Authority and Book Aid International.
In a speech read on behalf of the First Lady upon ordering, she reiterated the importance of reading as one of the safest ways to acquire a quality education, as it exposed children to the immense knowledge contained in books and other reading materials.
She said that since taking office in 2017, the NPP administration, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, has implemented several policies aimed at making education affordable and accessible to all Ghanaian children.
“The government has invested enormous resources in the implementation of policies such as free SHS, free hot meals, free textbooks and free uniforms, among others, all aimed at ensuring equal access to education. ‘education, to break the vicious cycle of inequalities, ”said Ms. Akufo-Addo.
However, she said laudable policies were unlikely to bear much fruit if the basics of reading were not strengthened.
The First Lady said that her Rebecca Foundation had therefore, through her Learn to Read, Read to Learn initiative, built, funded and commissioned many libraries across the country, including Wenchi in the Bono region, Sefwi Debiso in the Northwest Region, Moree in the Central Region, Daffiama Bussie Issah in the Upper West Region, Amansaman in the Greater Accra Region, and Kumawu in the Ashanti Region.
She took the opportunity to announce some near-completion libraries in Bortianor in the Greater Accra region and in Dambai in the Oti region, adding that the Rebecca Foundation will continue to support the government’s efforts to make accessible and attractive education for all. young people.
Ms Akufo-Addo also urged parents and other stakeholders to encourage their neighborhoods to attend reading facilities, stressing that literacy is how lifelong learning and a child’s ability learning at the highest level remained possible.
She advised people to continue to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols in all of their day-to-day activities, warning that the deadly disease is no respect for people and knows no borders.
Mr. Philip Basoah, Member of Parliament for Kumawu, thanked the First Lady for her support and congratulated her for her immense contribution to the empowerment of young people through education.
Mr. Samuel Addai Agyekum, Chief Executive of Kumawu District, as well as some Assembly officials and traditional leaders from the region were present at the commissioning.
