CW Supergirl Melissa Benoist Supports Sasha Calle’s DCEU Casting

CW Supergirl Melissa Benoist is voicing her support for the casting of Sasha Calle, who will play Supergirl in the upcoming Flash movie.

The CW Super girl, Melissa Benoist, expresses her support for the casting of Sasha Calle, who will play Supergirl in the upcoming Shine movie. Benoist has played Kara Danvers on the small screen since 2015, with her show’s run ending later this year with its sixth season. Calle, a newcomer, currently stars in the soap opera The young and the restless, for which she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy. She is the first actress of Latin descent to star in the role and is said to have beaten over 400 other actresses in a massive audition search.

Not much is known about Calle’s version of Supergirl yet. The fact that she shows up first Flash suggests that she will likely come from an alternate reality, as this film is set to explore the DC Multiverse, with an appearance of Michael Keaton’s Batman. There’s also a small hint that the DCEU may already have a Supergirl. In Steel man, when Clark discovers the Kryptonian colony ship in the Arctic that would serve as a sort of makeshift fortress of solitude, one of the rescue pods was open and empty, leading many to suspect that Kara Zor-El might already be somewhere.

Benoist expressed his support for Calle’s casting on his Instagram account, noting that the character is taller than any actress. Find out below.

It’s a touching manifestation of solidarity, especially since Benoist’s show ends early, probably because his older cousin is coming to the network in Superman and Lois. The Benoist show hasn’t always been a critical darling, but most agree that Benoist is the best thing about the show and led it through rough times with grace and charm. Benoist has been one of the CW Arrowverse’s greatest goodwill ambassadors over the years, so it’s no surprise that she remains humble and excited about handing over the baton to a new actress.

DC fans are very excited about Calle’s version of the character, and many have gotten used to enjoying more than one live iteration of the character, which means the multiverse concept should go relatively smoothly. It’s certainly a big step for Calle, who has limited experience, but Warner Bros. won gold when they also chose the largely unknown Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. If Calle can approach that level of dynamism in the role, Supergirl fans are going to be in for a treat.
