Tensions are mounting among members of the Zongo community in the Volta regional capital, Ho, over who is taking over the leadership of the Muslim community.
Following the disappearance of the former head of the Volta region, Umoro Danjimah Hamzah, it was necessary to choose a successor to lead the Muslim community, and this has been the bone of contention between two factions.
One party believes that Alfas Anas, who was the deceased’s first deputy imam, should take the post, while the other party opposes it.
Regardless of that, Alfas Anas was subsequently installed as the regional chief imam, a development the other faction completely disapproves of.
As a result, there was a power struggle over who leads the prayers at the central mosque.
Ho Municipal Action Police Commander Alexander Adade Yeboah said that in anticipation of a possible riot, the Ho Municipal Security Council advised to close the mosque to the public.
As a result, the Ho new Zongo community was forced to pray outside the mosque.
Reacting to this, Chief Imam Alfas Anas called this development unfortunate.
“I have been leading prayers in this mosque since 2005. All those who oppose me follow me. So my call is peace and truth, ”he said.
Young people, however, are agitated by the development which tends to cause chaos in Ghana’s most peaceful Muslim community.
“All of the Ulama agreed that Anas should be the leader of the Volta region. We were here when a chief from former Zongo came and said he would not accept it and that his own brother should take over, ”said Suhailu Mohammed Kidza, a youth from Ho New Zongo.
They therefore implore the national hierarchy of the Muslim community to call to order the factions in conflict and to resolve the outstanding issues amicably so that peace prevails.
