Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Minister-designate for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, said that despite recent setbacks in COVID-19 cases, Ghana has made huge strides in the fight against disease.
He said that contrary to popular belief, Ghana’s public health system was quite robust compared to the African situation.
In addition, during the COVID-19 outbreak, Ghana was able to assemble all the arsenals at its disposal with President Akufo-Addo leading the fight against the disease.
Dr Afriyie made the remark when he appeared before the parliamentary appointments committee to verify his re-appointment as minister.
The candidate who is the deputy (MP) for Sefwi-Wiawso was the former minister of the western region during the first term of President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
The candidate who has been transferred to the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation is expected to deal with climate change and environment issues, in particular the effects of illegal mining on plans of water.
Dr Afriyie, who is also a public health expert, explained that Ghana’s public health system had structures that dealt with mechanisms for health promotion, prevention and notification as well as systems that dealt with such outbreaks. .
He said Ghana was at the forefront of abolishing measles, whooping cough among other diseases that bother people in tropical climates.
He said that because of the capacity that had been built over the years, the government was able to bring together this expertise at the onset of COVID-19 and curb the rapid spread of the disease.
He said that while the disease spread to other places was exponential, Ghana’s was nowhere near the exponential curve people were concerned about.
Dr Afriyie, however, explained that a major challenge for the public health system was clinical services, which he said were under-resourced.
He insisted that Ghana has one of the best health systems in the world, adding that Ghanaians can be proud of themselves all over the world.
