A relative of the Queen has been jailed for 10 months for sexually assaulting a woman in her ancestral home.
Simon Bowes-Lyon, 34, Earl of Strathmore, pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman at Glamis Castle in Angus, Scotland, in February last year.
Bowes-Lyon, who is the son of a cousin of the Queen, was sentenced on Tuesday in the Dundee Sheriff’s Court.
The court had already heard that the assault had occurred in a room in the castle.
In a statement to the court after pleading guilty last month, Bowes-Lyon apologized and said he was ashamed of his actions.
He said he had “drunk too much” on the night of the attack, which he said was “no excuse” for his actions.
He added: “I didn’t think I was able to behave the way I did, but I had to face it and take responsibility.
“Over the past year, it’s been about seeking and receiving professional help and agreeing to plead guilty as quickly as possible.”
Glamis Castle is the seat of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, who are part of the family of the late Queen Mother.
