Former President Mahama is believed to have played a crucial role in Bagbin’s appointment as president.

According to Builsa Sud MP Clement Apaak, Bagbin’s appointment for the post was a “decision taken by our NDC leader, John Dramani Mahama”.

Despite this, it took about two weeks for the NDC leadership in parliament to secure the post of seasoned lawmaker, the post of president.

Chief Minority Whip and Asawase MP Muntaka Mubarak told Joy News on Sunday January 10, 2021 that a lot has been done to ensure that Bagbin is accepted by every NDC MP.

He said he had spoken to all 137 NDC deputies individually for two weeks to support Bagbin’s nomination.

“We were trying to make them understand that it was in our national interest to have a President on the other side so that we could put control over the executive,” he said.

A prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, said Bagbin was “the best person” in the NDC to be president under an Akufo-Addo presidency.

He said, “If the nation is to have an opposition chairman who can be expected not to unduly hamper the work of the government, then Bagbin is him.”
