A Chinese official from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) donated some life-saving equipment to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
This is to help improve children’s health and reduce malnutrition during this Covid-19 epidemic.
Items include iron-folic tablets, scales and measurement charts, vitamin A supplements, ready-to-use therapeutic foods, therapeutic milk, essential drugs and neonatal intensive care.
According to UNICEF Deputy Representative Fiachra McAsey, UNICEF has acted quickly to improve the health and nutrition of children in Ghana and has also helped realize the rights of every child.
Malnutrition continues to threaten the survival and development of children in Ghana.
It accounts for 24% of child deaths in Ghana and causes stunted growth and brain function.
Infant and young child feeding, breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices are under-practiced and contribute to undernutrition.
Today, only 52% of newborns are put to the breast within an hour of giving birth and 43% do not breastfeed exclusively at six months.
In addition, only 12% of children aged 6 to 23 months receive a high-quality diet with a recommended frequency for them to grow and develop well.
SGH Executive Director Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, who received the articles, expressed his gratitude to UNICEF.
“The numbers of malnutrition are increasing and most children die of malnutrition.
“When you come to hospitals and see the children, it’s very pathetic and sad,” he added.
