Three other people died as a result of the Akyem Asafo accident which occurred at dawn on Friday.

This brings the death toll to 19.

The accident, which took place between two VIPs on the Accra-Kumasi highway, killed 16 people on the spot.

Some bodies have been dismembered.

About five ambulances rushed to the scene to transport the injured to nearby hospitals in Asafo, Kyebi and surrounding areas.

Additionally, heavy vehicles converged on the scene to assist with rescue efforts and clear the wreckage area.

The accident allegedly occurred as one of the buses attempted to overtake the other.

The buses were two Kia Granbirds – one with registration number GT 5629-18 with passengers traveling to Kumasi from Accra and the other with registration number GE 5510-15.

The two pilots were among the dead.

Some locals say a three-year-old was among the dead.

The other passengers who survived with fatal injuries were taken to the government hospital in Suhum and Akyem Asafo health center for emergency treatment.

The bodies had to be extracted from the concerted buses by a team of first responders made up of police, firefighters and ambulance attendants from Suhum, Bunso, Kibi and Ayensuano.

They were deposited in the morgue of the government hospital in Suhum.
