Gunmen killed 36 people in two attacks in northern Nigeria on Wednesday, a day after insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades as security deteriorated in the face of Africa’s most populous nation, said officials and residents.

The latest attack comes less than a month after President Muhammadu Buhari replaced his longtime military leaders amid escalating violence, with armed forces fighting to reclaim other cities in the northeast overrun by the insurgents.
Last week, unidentified gunmen killed a student in an attack on a boarding school in north-central Niger state and abducted 42 people, including 27 students.
