Private lawyer Nii Kpakpo Somoa Addo said some prominent people in the country were part of the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ +) community.

He listed lawyers, judges and journalists among prominent figures in gayism and lesbianism.

While making his submission regarding LGBTQ + activism in the county on Citi Tv’s big issue, Nii Kpakpo Somoa said, “We cannot pretend that we cannot have the gay community in Ghana and the gay community in Ghana. Ghana involves some very important people, so the gay community exists… If you go to some places in Accra, you will see them. There are lawyers, judges, journalists… it goes through. They are famous people who have a certain sexual orientation that is different from what we take for granted.

He added that the LGBTQ + community is seeking to fight against the law that criminalizes its activities, hence LGBTQ + activism in recent times.

According to the lawyer, “You can’t do it openly because if you do it openly and get arrested you can be prosecuted for it. What we have done to our law since colonial times is criminalize it, what this community has sought to do is push it back through education, through activism.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reiterated the country’s position on controversies surrounding the legalization of LGBTQ + in Ghana.

According to him, homosexuality will not be legalized under his government.

He made this known during the investiture of the second archbishop of the Anglican Church of Ghana in Asante Mampong on Saturday February 27, 2021.
