The Akunu-Akoko Agrarian Community in Akokoo Local Government Area in southwest Ondo State was held over the weekend in the jugular by kidnappers.

The kidnappers who were armed to the teeth had kidnapped travelers from the community and taken them into the bush after sporadic gunfire to frighten residents.

However, the gunfire did not deter hunters, vigilantes and young people in the community who launched a manhunt to save the seven travelers.

Knowing the grounds of the community, the hunters and the vigilante would have caught up with the kidnappers who shot them.

As a result of the exchange of gunfire between the kidnappers and the hunters, one of the kidnappers was reportedly killed, forcing the other gang members to abandon their victims and stand aside.

Travelers who were in transit through the community to the north of the country were reportedly saved unharmed.

According to city regent Princess Tolani Orogun, when news of the kidnapping of travelers leaked into the city, the Community, Hunters and Youth Vigilance Group jumped into action and took action. started combing the forest to save the travelers.

“The efforts of the brave and courageous group and the young people paid off when the kidnappers exchanged gunshots with them.

“The gun duel resulted in the death of one kidnapper while others fled. And the seven travelers were saved unharmed.

While confirming the development, Ikare-Akoko Police Zone Commander, Deputy Police Commissioner Razak Rauf, said the remains of the dead kidnapper were deposited in the morgue of a local government public facility. .

Akunu, Ikakumo and Auga axis of Akoko, which shared borders with Edo and Kogi State, had recently witnessed numerous security problems, in particular kidnappings, banditry and armed robberies. , especially on highways within the community.

Meanwhile, agrarian community farmer Michael Bello revealed that due to the security situation in the area, many farmers are now afraid to go to their farms for fear of being kidnapped or killed.

For his part, the president of the Akunu Akoko community, Ade Aboginije called on the government to consider Akunu-Akoko’s special position as a gateway to Ondo State which borders the Edo States. and Kogi and to increase the number of surveillance and security to lead the axis. to safeguard the life and property of residents.
