False nominees, the creation of “plovie”, the HFPA roast and a Tarantino foot joke: it’s an opening that seemed almost normal.
There were a handful of major accolades over the past year, but none of them had the kind of opening that Sunday night’s Golden Globes had. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, joined in the animation functions but separated by the coasts, have started broadcasting from their respective cities. The usual banter the couple had from their past concerts and appearances were there – and not even with the usual video delay. Before you knew it, they were throwing fake titles for 2021 nominees like “Ali G Goes to Chicago” and “Irish Goodnight”.
Just because the two were separated by thousands of miles (Fey broadcasting from the Rainbow Room at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City and Poehler in the traditional Beverly Hilton Ballroom) didn’t mean they were alone. Instead of the evening’s many nominees, the crowd consisted of first responders and essential workers, laughing.
The two got rid of the social distancing jokes as soon as they arrived in a split-screen training designed to make you forget they weren’t in the same room. They quickly switched to traditional understudies on performers, directors, and writers who would normally be within literal earshot.
The writer / director has taken some of the hardest hits. About “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Fey joked, “What I love about Aaron Sorkin’s writing is that it can get seven men talking, but it’s like 100 men. who speak.” Meanwhile, going through a list of what celebrities “usually” do at the main table, Poehler slipped in a line on “Quentin Tarantino crawling under tables, just touching people’s feet.”
Making fun of Brits and deciding whether things are from TV or movies has long been a food for awards, so the two smashed ideas together: “If British actors play Brits, it’s TV. . If they’re playing Americans, it’s a movie. “
The demographic of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was a predominant topic of conversation in the run-up to the Sunday show. Golden Globes hosts usually have a long leash when it comes to roasting HFPA voters, and the combination of self-deprecation and apologetic patting started early.
“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is made up of about 90 international journalists – not black – who frequent movie junkets every year in search of a better life. We say around 90 because a few of them could be ghosts, and rumor has it that the German member is just a sausage that someone drew a little face on, ”Fey said.
The strangest joke in the monologue could have been about ‘Soul’, not just because she also starred in the HFPA Voters’ Pile – “‘Soul’ is a beautiful Pixar animated film where the soul of ‘a middle aged black man is accidentally knocked out of his body and into a cat. The HFPA really reacted to this movie because it has five cats. “- but because the woman who provided the voice that came out of the body of that man for most of this movie was the narrator of the joke: Fey herself.
After coining the term ‘plovie’ (a play that naturally turns into a movie), get a boost towards at least one late-night host (“‘The Queen’s Gambit’ is … all James Corden was doing. in ‘The Prom, “I guess.”), and right before the only finish line that makes sense (“Could this whole night have been an email?!?”), they finished the opening of the evening with a quasi-apology / nod to change on behalf of the HFPA.
“Even with stupid things, inclusiveness is important. And there are no black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press. I realize, HFPA, maybe you didn’t get the memo because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonald’s. But you have to change that. So here’s to change it, ”Fey said.
