Figures from the Western Region office of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) show a total of 20 people lost their lives as a result of road accidents in the region in January alone.
Last year 2020, the total number of deaths recorded in January was 14.
Thus, the total number of deaths increased by six cases this year during the month under review.
Of the number of deaths recorded in January this year, 18 of them were men, the other two being women.
During the reporting period, 57 commercial vehicles and 41 motorcycles were involved in the accidents.
However, there was a reduction in the number of private vehicles involved in crashes in January 2021 compared to the same period last year.
“Fifty-seven private vehicles had accidents in January this year, compared to 72 last year.”
Explaining further to Connect FM, NRSA Regional Director Nana Akua Asare said, “We also recorded 31 serious traffic accident cases in 2021 compared to 39 last year.”
“A total of 155 road accidents were recorded in the month of January 2021 alone,” she added.
She revealed that their preliminary observations show that the majority of recorded crashes are largely “the fault of the drivers involved in the crashes”.
The regional director advised drivers and other road users to obey road safety rules when using the roads.
“We also want to caution and urge drivers to use a little restraint when driving. In some cases you will find that if the driver had been a little patient the accident would have been avoided.
