As The Great British Bake Off continues to grow in popularity with viewers who expect perfection from baking, the celebrity version, which returns on Channel 4 next week, is increasingly seen as a celebration of how terrible people are.
In the upcoming series, which will raise funds for Stand Up To Cancer, Tom Allen has his baking temporarily glued to the bottom of the freezer. Daisy Ridley decides to cook a toilet-shaped showstopper. In another episode, psychotherapist and author Philippa Perry uses the word “help” over her creation.
Disasters are frequent. Rob Beckett recalls a technical challenge resembling a ‘cow slap’, while Allen announces to the tent, “I’m so embarrassed I could die.”
Still, it could have been worse. In a previous series, YouTuber and presenter Joe Sugg passed out after cutting their finger in the opening minutes of a challenge. This Morning host Alison Hammond believed her oven door was missing (when ‘she had retracted into the oven itself) and One Show host Alex Jones broke a bowl after failing to properly attach it to her KitchenAid, resulting in stitches. Incredibly, all of these incidents took place in the same episode.
With each of the series’ five episodes alone, there’s no need to follow too diligently. And this year the power of the star has increased by one level. The pandemic has given an unexpected boost to the programming of celebrity entertainment shows in recent months. When Lenny Henry was revealed to be Blob on the Masked Singer at the end of January and the host asked him why he wanted to participate, his reaction was frank: “I’ve been on lockdown since March.”
The Celebrity Bake Off lineup, which begins Tuesday, has been praised for being one of the best ever in a reality show, with Ridley, Dizzee Rascal, KSI internet star, James McAvoy, Katherine Ryan, Dame Kelly Holmes and Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall among those competing in the tent.
In an interview with Collider, Ridley mentionned: “I had the best time: I didn’t do a great job, but I didn’t cry.”
Social media users responded enthusiastically when Girls Aloud’s Nadine Coyle was invited to participate, after she had previously gone viral for the way she said “flour»While cooking Sunday brunch.
In the past, Sandi Toksvig has stepped in when Big Narstie has had to withdraw from competition on short notice. Continuing the trend of participating animators, Allen, who presents the Professional version of the series, dons an apron.
“Nice crack,” Hollywood says after cutting their shortbread in half at the end of a signature bake. “Thanks, but what do you think of the shortbread?” Allen said. A perfect pandemic tonic.
