The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) urges former President John Dramani Mahama to accept the Supreme Court’s verdict on the election petition filed against President Akufo-Addo and the Election Commission.
According to the party, the opposition’s 2020 National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate can demonstrate his political savvy by also calling on President Akufo-Addo to congratulate him.
In a statement signed by Secretary General John Boadu, the NPP argued that although President Akufo-Addo, then in opposition, lost the 2012 election petition after his defeat in the December 7, 2012 election, he accepted the judgment of the supreme court in order. to guarantee peace.
“This singular act by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo not only reaffirmed her long-standing loyalty to the rule of law as an accomplished democrat, as well as to her country and its citizens, but also earned her international praise and applause to him and to the country, ”the statement read. added.
Mr Boadu said he was unhappy that former President John Dramani Mahama was holding a press conference to incite disaffection with the judiciary and the Election Commission among Ghanaians.
“As noted, many expected John Mahama to take advantage of a similar situation on March 4 to prove his commitment to democratic principles, but that never happened, unfortunately.
“Instead, John Mahama prefers to hold a press conference to unleash invectives and unprovoked attacks against the judiciary and the electoral management body, much to the chagrin of democratic observers and the generality of the Ghanaian people. ”
The NPP statement follows a press briefing by the petitioner in the recently concluded election petition.
While expressing disappointment at the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to dismiss his election petition, Mr Mahama said his defeat came as no surprise as the Supreme Court had dismissed many petitions filed by his legal team.
Once again, the NDC standard-bearer had alleged that his quest to hold Election Commission Chairman Jean Mensa accountable for electoral anomalies was blocked by a cordon and firewall.
“Although I know that we are legally bound by the decision of the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court of Ghana, I do not agree with the process of the trial and the court’s decision,” he said. he said emphatically.
But Secretary-General John Boadu said that while the former president may have “lost an opportunity to repeat the enviable feat achieved by President Akufo-Addo in 2012 and get his name on the books of history of consummate and patriotic Democrats, it is certainly not too much. late for him to repair the wrong.
“It is for this reason that the NPP calls on the former president, John Dramani Mahama, to do what is necessary in the collective interest of our nation,” he added.
