Legal expert Rainer Akumperigya has expressed concern over the decision by some NDC deputies to approve a number of ministerial candidates nominated by President Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Dr Akumperigya described the sudden and unexpected decision taken by some members of the minority as problematic.
He told Samson Lardy Anyenini, that as a grassroots member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the endorsement of certain appointees, now including Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, hurts him, as well as many supporters.
“The minority itself wrote a thesis and theorized why some people should be rejected. It was a week away, so you had a principled position based on qualifying criteria that thought these candidates were incompetent or lacked the competence to be approved ministers of our state.
“Then in a week you turn around. That is problematic. Much of it is the inability to stay together on track or on principle and it hurts. “
“I’m as hurt as any of the people on the base. At a time when we were gaining momentum, the events of January 6 at midnight, the NDC Minority Caucus had created a semblance of unity and solidarity as we have seen elsewhere and I expected the same. solidarity exists in the future, ”he added. .
He said on the show that the country had missed an opportunity to address the issue of excessive power given to the executive.
“So in the future, what kind of bills are going to go through Parliament? Does that mean that we are going to have the back of the Agyapa ugly again, ”he asked.
On Friday, President Akufo-Addo was sworn in to 28 appointed ministers who were reviewed and approved by Parliament at Jubilee House.
On Hawa Koomson’s endorsement as Minister of Fisheries, Dr Rainer Akumperigya said Awutu Senya East MP failed to impress the people of Ghana when checking out how they planned to lead the fishing industry.
He said a majority of Ghanaians wanted the lawmaker to be rejected.
“If we were to do a census or a poll to find out how many Ghanaians would actually have wanted some of the candidates like Hawa Koomson dropped, you would have a resounding majority of Ghanaians because there are a lot of Ghanaians looking for substance. .
“They want their material well-being to improve and they will vote for some of these things. The least they can have is [someone] impose on them someone who doesn’t have what they have [takes] to publicly grasp the fundamental issues, ”he said.
According to him, the precedent being created is that which the president appoints automatically becomes Minister of State.
“One would expect the President himself to have carried out his substantive work based on the competence of the appointees.
“There are always supervisory notes from the chief of staff on who is doing well and who is not doing well. I am surprised. If I want to generally congratulate the list he submitted to Parliament, you will notice that these are very loyal people. I think the president just opted for loyalty on top of anything else, ”he explained.
Meanwhile, Dr Akumperigya urges the leadership of the NDC to remain calm in the face of its current problems.
“As a party we are now in a very difficult situation and no one should think that 2024 is in the distant future, it starts now,” he said.
His appeal follows a statement presented to NDC leaders in parliament; Alban Bagbin, Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka Mubarak by the party’s communications manager, Sammy Gyamfi.
Mr. Gyamfi accused the said figures in Parliament of having betrayed the NDC after approving certain designated “undeserved” ministers appointed by the president.
