Undefeated race ends as City lose Manchester derby
The visitors exhausted the winners of the second derby of the season in Manchester thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw, ending City’s remarkable 21-game winning streak.
Pep Guardiola’s side dominated the derby for the most part but were unable to convert the odds and break a resilient United defense.
Reflecting on our first loss in 29 games, De Bruyne said City’s relentless mentality was still there, but admitted our usual sharpness in front of goal was lacking.
“The mentality was always the same on our part but we just couldn’t get the ball in,” admitted the Belgian.

“Then we played pretty well but we didn’t score and that made a difference and made a mistake pressing for the second goal.”
The visitors got off to a perfect start after Gabriel Jesus fouled Anthony Martial in the penalty area, allowing Fernandes to open the scoring from the spot in two minutes.
Despite the early blow, De Bruyne believes he and his teammates could still have gotten back into the game.
“It’s not best to be late a minute after the game starts, but you still have the rest of the 90 minutes.
“I don’t think we started well. We knew it would be difficult from there and we played in their hands.
“We needed 15 minutes to settle. I think we played well but we didn’t score.”
The loss to United is City’s first loss since November and puts an end to the club’s joint record of 28 games unbeaten, and with the loss to our home rivals, it makes things a bit more difficult for the Belgian.
“Obviously it’s not nice to lose the derby but it happens. It’s never nice to lose but sometimes it can be necessary.
“We got through some bad times today, but we need to learn from them as a group.”
Guardiola’s side will be looking to put the derby disappointment behind them, as we return to midweek action against Southampton in the Premier League, and De Bruyne sees a great opportunity to bounce back.
“We are moving on, Wednesday is a new game and we will focus on that. We are confident that in the next game we will put the [missed] chances, ”he added.
