Former President John Dramani Mahama’s election petition may have been successful despite being rejected by the Supreme Court, argued Martin Kpebu, a lawyer.
Speaking on the big question, he hinted that Mr. Mahama had entertained doubts about the legitimacy of President Akufo-Addo’s electoral victory.
“Mr. Mahama managed to keep this conversation going about the legitimacy of Nana Addo Danquah… that’s the whole point,” Mr. Kpebu said.
According to him, there were already a number of Ghanaians who doubted the conduct of the election.
“He [the petition] just added to the fuel so you can see that a conspiracy theory has been created; a theory of a stolen verdict and it sold well.
“In terms of electoral psychology, he [Mahama] gained a lot of kilometers. He fueled a conspiracy; a standard.
Despite controversies over Mr Mahama’s lawyers’ inability to summon the chairman of the Election Commission to testify in the case, Mr Kpebu felt she could never have made a difference in the case.
“What did Jean Mensa just say that could have reversed the result? There was nothing.”
Mr. Mahama had filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to overturn the election results and order a new ballot due to alleged irregularities.
He argued that neither he nor President Akufo-Addo achieved a clear majority due to the omission of the South Techiman constituency from the provisional declaration of results by the Election Commission (EC).
But the Supreme Court upheld President Akufo-Addo’s victory in the December 2020 presidential election after rejecting the election petition.
