The Builsa Nord municipal police command in the Haut-Est region prevented young people from Bilinsa from building speed ramps on portions of the road on the Sandema-Chuchuliga section.
According to the youths who tied red bands and dug trenches on the road, the act would reduce recent road accidents that resulted in the deaths of four members of the community.
Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (ASP) Francis Kwasi Amankwah, who was leading a team of police to ensure law and order at the scene, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the command had received information on a road the day before.
He said the victims of the accident, including; a pedestrian was rushed to Sandema hospital, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead on arrival after sustaining multiple fractures and injuries.
“The passenger’s pilot also had multiple head injuries and was responding to outpatient treatment, but the pilot was in critical condition and was transferred to the operating room for attention,” said the captain.
ASP Amankwah said the body of the deceased was handed over to the family for burial: “After the funeral, we received reports that the young people had gathered and were riding speed ramps on the road. .
He said police officers, upon arriving at the scene, met with Mr. Clifford Apag-yarik, Assembly Member for the Bilinsa Electoral Area, who succeeded in convincing young people in the community to stop the act.
“They do not have the mandate to build speed ramps on the road, it is the duty of the Road Authority, moreover, the road is still under construction. Instead, I will advise them to discuss the issues with the contractor on the road so that time speed ramps can be built to slow free movement and prevent accidents.
ASP Amankwah said: “What they have done is dangerous for the community members themselves, the majority of them use motorcycles. You can imagine a runner at full speed going through the trenches he made here. The person will do a somersault and may die in the process. ”
Mr Apag-yarik, who spoke to the young people to overturn their decision, told the GNA that they would come together as members of the community and decide on appropriate ways to reduce accidents on the road.
He said young people were ready to cover the trenches and stay calm while stakeholders found appropriate actions to address the issue.
