The European Tour has ruled out the possibility of holding some tournaments in the United States this year.

With the coronavirus restrictions affecting travel to Europe, the Tour had considered playing a number of events in Florida through its “strategic alliance” with the PGA Tour.

European tour events are planned in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Portugal after the Masters in April, but general manager Keith Pelley has now confirmed plans to replace them with a ‘Florida Swing’ are no longer in the pipeline.

“As a world tour, we face challenges due to current international travel restrictions and therefore we need to explore all available options to ensure our members play a full program,” Pelley said in a statement.

Rory McIlroy had hinted that this was the case during his press conference ahead of the Players’ Championship on Tuesday.

“Pretty sure that won’t happen which is a good thing because I think it means things are starting to improve in Europe,” he said.

The Qatar Masters this week sees the return of regular European Tour action for the first time since the Saudi international in early February.
