Uganda launched its mass vaccination against Covid-19 on Wednesday after receiving 864,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine last week.

Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng was the first to receive a stroke at the main hospital in the capital, Kampala.

Priority is given to the country’s health workers and many of them line up at Mulago Referral Hospital in Kampala to get vaccinated.

Other groups expected to receive the vaccine are security personnel considered essential to support the Covid-19 response, teachers, adults over the age of 50 and people with underlying health conditions.

The vaccination campaign will be extended to health centers across the country for the next five days.

Those vaccinated will receive their second dose in May and June.

An additional supply of 2,688,000 doses of vaccine from the Covax program is expected in June.

Uganda aims to immunize 49.6% of its population gradually.
