Claressa Shields is hopeful that a fight with Savannah Marshall could help close the pay gap between men and women, her adviser says.
Shields is undefeated after 11 professional fights, with his last loss to Marshall when both were amateurs, leading to a desire to settle scores in a rematch.
Marshall hasn’t lost in nine fights and is the current WBO middleweight belt carrier. Shields adviser Mark Taffet has said he wants promoters and networks to come together to help donate significant sums to fighters.
“We love Savannah Marshall’s fight,” Shields advisor Mark Taffet told Sky Sports.
“But we want [Marshall’s promoter] Eddie Hearn, other promoters and networks join us in making meaningful progress towards equality for women.
“And that includes appropriate compensation for premium events.
“We are at a crossroads in the history of the sport, a moment of transformation when the world’s greatest fighter stood up to make her point.
“Claressa Shields is competing against women but she is fighting for equality. The time is right.”
The American fighter has previously said she favors shifting women’s boxing from two-minute rounds to three-minute rounds to bring parity with men’s discipline, in order to negate arguments against paying women more in boxing for their efforts.
Shields beat Marie-Eve Dicaire this weekend to become the first undisputed female two-weight champion.
