Authorities in the Nigerian state of Niger closed all public secondary schools for two weeks from Friday.
Hajiya Hannatu Jibrin Salihu, who heads the state’s education ministry, said the two-week shutdown should give security agencies “the time and opportunity to conduct a full risk assessment.”
More than 20 schools in the state have been closed following the kidnapping of 27 boys and their teachers from a secondary school in the state’s Kagara region last month.
This kidnapping was followed by the kidnapping of more than 250 girls from a secondary school in neighboring Zamfara state, where some schools have also been closed since the incident.
Kano, Yobe and Katsina states in northern Nigeria have also recently closed some high schools due to criminals targeting students in a growing kidnapping-for-ransom crisis.
Thursday’s announcement by the Niger state government followed a meeting with various security agencies.
Ms. Salihu said the goal of the school closures was to provide “strategies that will restore and ensure the sustainable safety and security of students, school infrastructure, education officials and teachers in the state.” .
