The Coalition of National Election Observers (CODEO) congratulated President Akufo-Addo and former President John Mahama for their civil and diplomatic attitude during and after the electoral petition trial which has just ended.
Election observers, in a post-election observation and petition report for the post-2020 presidential election, applauded the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for seeking legal redress from the court, as well as President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). ) for showing good behavior during the process.
“CODEO congratulates Mr. Mahama and the NDC for raising their grievances through legitimate electoral decision-making channels, including the courts. CODEO particularly congratulates Mr. Mahama for accepting the outcome of the election petition despite his disagreement with the legal processes and the Court’s verdict.
“CODEO also congratulates the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP for their general good conduct during the court hearings and its consequences.”
On March 4, the Supreme Court rejected a petition filed by John Mahama challenging the declaration of the 2020 election results declared by the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.
The seven-member panel of judges dismissed the petition as baseless and reaffirmed NPP’s Akufo-Addo as chairman.
In response to the ruling, 2020 NDC presidential candidate John Mahama, despite his disappointment, said his defeat came as no surprise as the Supreme Court had rejected many requests filed by his legal team.
CODEO is of the opinion that the second election petition filed under the 4e The Republic deepens the country’s respect for the rule of law and will help strengthen electoral processes in Ghana.
Highlighting the prospects for the country’s electoral process, CODEO instructed the Electoral Commission to “reflect” and “make appropriate reforms to strengthen stakeholder confidence and public confidence in the electoral results”.
Said political actors include political parties, civil society organizations (CSOs), the National Commission for Civic Education, security agencies, National Media Communication (NMC), among others.
Although the electoral process in Ghana last year was generally peaceful, incidents of violence were recorded which resulted in the deaths of eight Ghanaians.
In this context, CODEO urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to facilitate investigations into the matter and provide the necessary information to citizens.
“It will be a huge disappointment if the IGP and the police department fail to meet this expectation,” the report said, as getting perpetrators to book will build public confidence in the delivery of justice. .
