The Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC) urged Muslim communities in Nigeria to get vaccinated against COVID-19 without any fear.
The pro-Muslim nongovernmental group said the vaccination would help curb the spread of the coronavirus.
MURIC director Ishaq Akintola gave the advice on Friday in a statement made available to reporters in Abuja.
“The COVID-19 vaccine is designed to protect those who take it by causing their bodies to produce substances called antibodies whose function is to fight disease.
“We’ve seen our leaders at both the federal and state levels take injections, it’s to build confidence in us.
“We urge Nigerian Muslims and the rest of the population to adopt the vaccine. Let us obey our leaders as enshrined in the Glorious Quran (4:59), ” he said.
Akintola also reaffirmed the position of Islamic academics on the importance of vaccination during the pandemic.
“We reaffirm the position of scholars of Islam, in particular that of the prolific Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah in his book Majmu ‘al-Fataawa.
“Scholars also quoted from the Hadith of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) where he said: ‘Seek medical treatment.’
“And Islamic scholars agree that vaccination is halal (permitted),” he said.
The director of MURIC called on cynics to rethink and accept the vaccine for the benefit of their health.
“We are concerned about the right of every Nigerian to lead a healthy life free from disease.
“We also believe that the lives of Nigerians are important because no Nigerian deserves to lose their life due to an epidemic when a vaccine has been made available,” he said.
The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the country received four million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on March 2.
The NAN also reports that the vaccination exercise has since started as doses of the vaccine have been sent to all states.
