The National Association of Graduated Students of Ghana (GRASAG) welcomed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to facilitate the establishment of an open university in Ghana.
According to the Association, it appears that this announcement responds to years of advocacy by the Graduate Students Association.
After the successful establishment of the University, the Association noted that Ghana will join the league of countries operating open universities, including India, Israel and the United Kingdom.
During the COVID-19 era, GRASAG reported that an open university will facilitate virtual enrollment, course delivery, certification and ensure affordability.
In a statement signed and issued by the National President of GRASAG, Ms. Heartwill Selasi Tamekloe and the Association’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Ebenezer Yao Agbenyo, on behalf of the Association, said that physical contact and stress would be minimized.
The statement postulated that an open university will help increase the gross enrollment rate in higher education in Ghana, which is currently 18.8%.
“As the official spokesperson for the country’s research fraternity, we assure the government of our unwavering support, availability and willingness to make this idea a reality,” the statement said.
“The association has lessons to share from its experience in running webinars and online conferences,” he added.
To that end, the statement called on the president and the education ministry to expand the laptop computer distribution program to graduate students.
According to the statement, this will “strengthen our role as partners in national development through research and practice, and also allow our members to fully benefit from the services of the Open University and other webinars.”
The statement wished the President and his administration the best for their second term.
