The Ghana Publishers Association has revealed that it will take disciplinary action against one of its members, Badu Nkansah Publications, for marketing offensive and inappropriate textbooks.
According to Association President Asare Konado Yamoah, the content of Ghana’s Class 3 history textbook deviates from the standards instituted to ensure that the right content is provided to learners.
“When we first met, the publisher and the general manager were present and we were not lacking in words with them; after reviewing and reviewing the content of what is the subject of controversy. We told them it was an aberration that we believe was unwarranted.
“We have disciplinary procedures within our association and we have made it clear to them that we will pass disciplinary action to them and that if they are found guilty by the committee, appropriate sanctions will be imposed. Said the president.
Speaking on PM: Express Tuesday, chairman of the Ghana Publishers Association, Asare Konado Yamoah condemned the controversial publication and dissociates himself from the content of said books.
Badu Nkansah, editors of the “History of Ghana” textbook, which sparked an outcry among Ghanaians, apologized wholeheartedly for his “offensive description” of the sheep in the publication.
But the Ghana Publishers Association has said it will not support any indiscipline on the part of industry players who flout guidelines and regulations by submitting their content to the NaCCA for approval.
“This issue of unapproved textbooks has been a matter of serious concern to the publishers in whom we have written so many NaCCA correspondents; we expressed our doubts and ordered them to lift the hammer and hit hard those who sell unapproved books, ”said Yamoah JoyNews.
Mr. Asare Konado Yamoah indicated that Badu Nkansah Publications has started removing the said textbooks from schools and bookstore shelves.
He believes this measure is one way to avoid the damage that said reading materials can cause to unsuspecting readers.
