Racing driver and Top Gear star Sabine Schmitz has died at the age of 51.
The German, widely known as the “Queen of the Nürburgring”, had suffered a long illness with cancer.
A statement issued by the famous German racecourse said: “The Nürburgring has lost its most famous racing driver.

“Sabine schmitz died far too soon after a long illness. She and her joyful nature will be missed. Rest in peace Sabine! “
The death of Schmitz, who appeared regularly on BBC One’s Top Gear show, sparked a wave of tributes.
Former show host Jeremy Clarkson, who has appeared alongside him in a number of episodes, said, “Terrible news about Sabine Schmitz. Such a sunny person and so full of beans.”
Current presenter Paddy McGuinness said: “She gave me advice on how to drive a Ferrari really fast and stalked me in a banger race.
“Brilliantly bonkers and an amazing human being! RIP the great Sabine Schmitz.”
Top Gear presenter Chris Harris also posted a picture of himself with Schmitz, saying, “Rest in peace, wonderful, powerful and hilarious person.”
A tweet posted by the official account of Porsche, whose cars she raced in competition, said: “Very sad to hear that Sabine Schmitz (1969-2021) has passed away. The ‘Queen of the Nordschleife’ was a favorite of the crowd because of its open, humorous way.
“The double winner of @ 24hNBR was an icon behind the wheel of the #Frikadelli #Porsche. Our sympathy goes out to her family and friends.”
