BEIJING – Chinese automaker BYD is recruiting engineers for its first overseas battery plant in Europe, the Warren Buffett-backed company said on Wednesday as it worked to become an electric vehicle supplier.

BYD, based in the southern city of Shenzhen, which also makes semiconductors for electric vehicles, sold 426,972 vehicles last year, including 189,689 electric vehicles.

“Planning for the plant involves preparing the supply to European automotive customers and preparing for BYD’s further expansion of overseas business,” a BYD representative told Reuters, without detailing the ‘location or manufacturing capacity.

Chinese EV battery makers, including CATL, are adding production facilities in Europe, where automakers from Volkswagen Group to Daimler are expanding their lineup of fully electric vehicles.
