The Office of Economic and Organized Crime (EOCO) has opened investigations into reports of baby harvesting unions in the country.
According to the criminal investigation agency, four petitions have been received from some mothers regarding their inability to access their newborns in some health facilities in Accra.
This comes just two months after the arrest of 11 people suspected of being involved in the removal of babies.
EOCO Executive Director, COP, retired Frank Adu-Poku on Thursday, March 18, 2021, provided details of his team’s investigations into the matter.
“The petition is from a lady who is a banker, but for some reason we don’t want to mention her name. It was a banker who came to our office with a petition. She said she was rushed to 37 Military Hospital due to pregnancy complications and Dr Hope Quarshie Mensah referred her to her private hospital (Susan Clinic) because he didn’t there was no bed available at the 37 military hospital.
“We understand that the lady first went to Holy Trinity Hospital and was referred to 37 Military Hospital, but as Dr Quarshie works at 37 Military Hospital he claimed there was no no bed there and subsequently the lady was taken to her hospital and according to the lady she had a natural delivery and heard her baby cry but was later informed that the baby was not there had not done and had been eliminated without his consent. This matter is also under investigation, but we need to explain how the baby was disposed of. According to the doctor, he gave it to a cleaner to take to Awudome cemetery.
Meanwhile, EOCO says he won’t be deterred by threats from some anonymous people in the line of duty.
According to the agency, members of the EOCO and the Medical and Dental Council received threats from unknown people following the arrest of around 11 people in January for the baby-selling union.
Frank Adu-Poku, retired from the COP, issued a warning to these people.
“Some of us have been in this investigative work and as a dead goat we fear no knife, but there are faceless cowards threatening some of our officials and officials from the Medical and Dental Council. But we want to take this opportunity to let them know that we are not at all disturbed and that the threats to the lives of these officials will not stop us but rather will inspire us to continue to protect public health and safety by preventing and detecting organized crime. “
“However, we want to send out this strong warning that these unscrupulous and faceless people should give up on such things as it will have no effect on our work.”
In a related development, the Sefwi-Wiawso Divisional Police Command arrested five people for stealing two-week-old twins in Punikrom, Waiwso Municipality, Northwest Region.
The suspects are Paulina Owusu 26, Haruna Yusif 36, Stephen Owusu 32, Kofi Nkrumah, 24, and Sampson Addai, 33.
Confirming the arrest to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Christopher Dzakel, commander of the Waiwso division, said four of the suspects had been arrested earlier, but Kofi Nkrumah , then at large, was subsequently arrested.
According to him, her outfit had information on March 14, 2021 that Paulina Owusu of Sefwi-Boako under her jurisdiction had hired four men to steal a baby from her and that she had rented an apartment for them.
