Sony World Photography Awards 2021: the best images revealed

A photo of a woman surrounded by drying fish in Vietnam and another showing lightning strikes over a lavender field in Spain are among the 10 winners in the winner category of the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards open competition announced on Thursday.

Organized by the World Photography Organization, the annual open competition selects “the best unique images” from categories such as travel, architecture and street photography.

Vietnamese photographer Khanh Phan won the travel category for the image of the drying fish, which was taken at the Long Hai fish market in Ba Ria -Vung Tau, Vietnam.

Spanish photographer Juan López Ruiz won the landscape category for capturing the moment lightning strikes a lavender field, with a lone tree in the center.

German photographer Klaus Lenzen won the architecture category for his image of a staircase at the Hyatt hotel in Düsseldorf that appears to float in space.

And F. Dilek Uyar from Turkey was named the winner of the Street Photography category for a photo of a municipal worker in Ankara, Turkey disinfecting a train platform.

The winners of the other six categories are: Tamary Kudita, Zimbabwe, in the creative category; Mariano Belmar Torrecilla, Spain, lifestyle; Marijo Maduna, Croatia, motion; Cristo Pihlamäe, Estonia, natural world and wildlife; Kata Zih, Hungary, object; and Lyudmila Sabanina, Russian Federation, portrait.

A woman dries trays of fish at the Long Hai fish market in Vietnam's Vung Tau province.  Thousands of scad trays are dried on rooftops and in yards by hundreds of workers.  I came to Long Hai for a photo trip and was overwhelmed by the scale of the fishing village.

The winners of the 10 categories will now be considered for the general title and a prize of $ 5,000. They also receive a selection of Sony digital imaging equipment. The big winner of the Open competition will be announced on April 15th.

Over 100 photographers were shortlisted for the competition alongside the category winners. The winning and shortlisted works will be featured in a virtual exhibition on the World Photography Organization website.

The 2021 competition was judged by Gastón Deleau, director of the FOLA gallery (Fototeca Latinoamericana – the Latin American photo library) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
