Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has launched a publicity and readiness campaign titled “100 Days Countdown to 2021 Population and Housing Census” in Accra to prepare citizens for this national program on most important data collection on the population and housing situation in Ghana.
Among other innovations, the 2021 population and housing census, which will begin on the night of Sunday, June 27, will be the first fully digital census, with the use of tablets for data entry instead of traditional paper questionnaires. According to officials of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), going green will save the country from printing more than seven million household questionnaires.
It will also use the Geographical Positioning System (GPS) to capture the location of all structures and use interactive area maps for precise identification of enumeration and supervision areas.
The 2021 SSP will also see the implementation, for the first time, of data link technology aimed at harmonizing and improving statistics in the West Africa sub-region. The implementation of the project for the harmonization and improvement of statistics in West Africa (2020-2024) aims to ensure efficient production of data through cooperation and partnership with the national statistical offices of seven countries. Speaking at the launch on Friday, March 19, 2021 in Accra, the vice president said the next 100 days are very important for the conduct of the country’s third population and housing census, which goes beyond the simple counting people.
“Despite the few errors in the conduct of population censuses in Ghana in our modern history, Ghana has been fairly consistent in counting, knowing and understanding the size, structure and dynamics of its population.
“Although many people often think of population censuses as just a count of people, the whole dimension of the census goes much further. How many are we, what is the mix of the sexes, the distribution of ages, birth and death and migration, what we do to earn a living, even where we live, the quality of our housing and our access to public services – health and education. So we do more than count people.
“The 2021 census will provide important data for policy formulation aimed at transforming Ghana’s economy and boosting economic development. Knowing the dynamics of population change helps us plan our education needs, locate health facilities, allocate our social spending and identify those who need help most in our society ”, a- he stressed.
Referring to the importance of the different modules of the survey, Vice President Bawumia highlighted the module on housing conditions, which, he said, “will provide data to assess the quality of housing, the availability of utilities in housing units as well as to determine the tenure of housing. arrangements. The module will also capture, better than before, the sanitation conditions in our communities.
He continued, “I am very impressed that the ESG has integrated the ICT module into the census to determine the level of digital application and access in the country. Indeed, the census will provide comprehensive data on the access and use of ICTs in the country to improve the development of the sector.
“We are interested in rural penetration, Internet use, ICT device ownership, mobile phone use for financial transactions and how ICT can change lives. and affect livelihoods. ”
Vice President Bawumia called on people living in Ghana to cooperate with census officials to ensure the success of the program, saying, “We ask for your support before census night. Over the next 100 days, the GSS will conduct a national advertising, education and advocacy campaign aimed at mobilizing resources, raising awareness among stakeholders, developing strategic partnerships and building public confidence in the census.
“The census is a priority development activity and requires the mobilization of state resources and the use of existing state infrastructure. As such, the President is committed to ensuring that the Ghana Statistical Service receives the necessary support from all ministries, departments and agencies and from all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.
